j’ai fini!

Today I took my final exams at the Sorbonne and I finished the written portion of my course (I have my oral exams on Tuesday).

Acutally, I didn’t take the exams at the actual Sorbonne. Instead, I took my exams at the place where all Parisian college students take their exams, a place called La Maison d’Examens (or, in English, “the Exam house”). It was a huge building on the outskirts of Paris that was about 15-20 stories high and had at least twenty huge classrooms that seated at least 200 people….so, in a nutshell, it was a massive place.

Since I went to a small U.S. university where I sat for exams with about 20 other classmates, I had no idea what I was getting into when I had to show my student ID at the door and get escorted to my seat (number 256!). I felt like I was taking the SAT’s all over again, but without as much stress or risk!

The exam was hard, for sure. But I think I was prepared. We had to take four sections today: a grammar section, a reading comprehension section, a redaccion (or an essay writing section), and a listening comprehension section.

When I left the Maison, I felt like a weight had been lifted off of me, and also, I felt a huge sense of accomplishment. I can’t believe I took French exams….in France! And, even more, I think I actually did ok!!!

It’s been a long four months of learning this language…but as I was riding home today on the train, I realized that it all was so worth it!
